Avenue Q
MIT Musical Theatre Guild, August/September 2013
Dir. Dawn Erickson
Avenue Q was a unique challenge to costume, since the cast was a mix of human characters and, well, puppets. I sewed several tiny versions of shirts, a graduation gown, pajamas, a sexy dress, and Scientologist uniforms for this bizarre show--all engineered to slip on puppets with rods attached to their hands.
Overall, I kept the characters' colors bright and saturated so that the puppeteers, dressed in black, would fade into the background by comparison. Little details, like wedding boutineires and a Muppets-print hospital gown, kept this project lots of fun and the in-jokes flying.
