Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
Emerson Umbrella, March/April 2014
Dir. James Tellenbach
*DASH Award Nomination for Best Costume Design of a Musical!*
BBAJ is a manic romp through history--irreverant, sexy, and totally evocative of a rock concert. At the same time, it's definitely rooted in US history, covering the breadth of the 1800's. In my costume design, I did my best to blend period styles of the early 1800's with bits of modern glam: combat boots, metal studs, and glam-rock details. And guy-liner. So much guy-liner.
As with Angels, the biggest challenge for this show (besides the hauling of so much bloody laundry back and forth to Concord every night, sans automobile...) was managing several looks for each actor involved. An actor would be part of the "Vote for Jackson" mob one second, a Red Coat the next, a scheming Founding Father a scene later, and participate in a bloody battle somewhere in between. It was a musical with gunshots, blood effects, quick changes, and a child actor. The only thing that would have made it more complicated is an animal act.
Regardless, it earned several DASH nominations, was a lot of fun, and ended up looking pretty punkin' awesome!
